Refugee Welcome Program

Our community will be welcoming a refugee family settling in Madison through Jewish Social Services' Refugee Welcome Program.

Shaarei Shamayim is joining forces with Jewish Social Services to purchase beds, mattresses and other household goods for the family’s new home, collect gently used furniture, and help a family resettle in our city. This is a significant project for our small community, but we are confident that we can step up and make this a success.

Our Bet Sefer classes have already started learning about refugees and are putting together boxes of household items. Several of our teens have volunteered to haul furniture.

But we need your help too. Let’s make this a community-wide project.

Donating Furniture and Household Goods

Jewish Social Services asks that certain donations be new and others in very good or lightly used condition.

Making a Financial Contribution

Our goal is to raise $6,000 to purchase items for the family’s new home such as beds, mattresses, and household goods such as laundry detergent and diapers. It also includes $2,000 for the first two months of rent.

Every contribution will make a big difference. Did you know….

  • $5 buys a pillow
  • $25 buys a box of diapers
  • $50 rents a truck for a day to pick up donations of furniture
  • $150 buys the first week’s food for the family
  • $180 buys a mattress for a child
  • $250 buys a mattress for a couple

We welcome donations of any size!

Why Resettling Refugees is a Jewish Issue

Jewish Social Services works closely with HIAS, (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), which is the national Jewish resettlement agency. Check out their video on why resettling refugees is a Jewish issue.
